Stages of the APPSC Examination

The APPSC examination process is divided into three main stages:

Preliminary Examination (Prelims)

The preliminary exam is the first stage and serves as a screening test. It consists of two objective-type papers:

  • Paper I: General Studies (200 marks)

  • Paper II: Aptitude Test (200 marks)

Each paper is of two hours duration. The marks obtained in the prelims are not counted for the final merit list but are essential to qualify for the mains.


Main Examination (Mains)

Candidates who clear the prelims advance to the mains, which is more detailed and analytical. The mains exam consists of:

  • Qualifying Paper: English (300 marks)

  • Paper I: Essay (250 marks)

  • Paper II: General Studies I (250 marks)

  • Paper III: General Studies II (250 marks)

  • Paper IV: General Studies III (250 marks)

  • Paper V: General Studies IV (250 marks)

Each paper is descriptive and designed to test candidates’ understanding of various subjects, writing skills, and analytical abilities. The marks scored in the mains contribute significantly to the final ranking.


Personal Interview (Viva-Voce)

Candidates who pass the mains are called for the interview round, which carries 275 marks. The interview panel evaluates:

  • Personality and communication skills

  • Knowledge of current affairs

  • Decision-making ability

  • Leadership qualities

Performance in the interview, combined with the mains score, determines the final selection.


Final Selection Process

The final merit list is prepared based on the marks obtained in the mains and interview. Candidates with the highest scores are recruited for various state government positions.
